How to Put an iPhone on Silent (with Pictures)

The iPhone can be silenced using a simple switch or from within the Settings app.
STEPS
METHOD 1 OF 2: THE SWITCH METHOD

TO SILENCE MOST SOUNDS ON YOUR PHONE, FLIP THE SWITCH ON THE LEFT SIDE OF YOUR IPHONE ABOVE THE VOLUME CONTROL BUTTONS SO THAT AN ORANGE LINE IS VISIBLE AND A BELL WITH A LINE THROUGH IT SHOWS ON SCREEN. This prevents messages and calls from making sounds.
METHOD 2 OF 2: THE SOFTWARE METHOD

TO SILENCE ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR IPHONE, INCLUDING KEYBOARD CLICKS AND LOCK SOUNDS, TAP THE SETTINGS ICON TO LAUNCH THE SETTINGS APP.

TAP SOUNDS.

MOVE THROUGH EACH SETTING ON THE SOUNDS SCREEN AND SET THEM TO OFF, INCLUDING TEXT, VOICEMAIL, LOCK SOUNDS AND KEYBOARD CLICKS. For alerts with a sound applied, change the setting to None.
TIPS
If you set the Change with Buttons option to ON on the Sound Settings screen, you can use the iPhone’s volume buttons to set the volume of your ringtone and alerts.
WARNINGS
Make sure you don’t have any alarms set on your iPhone. These will sound regardless of whether the phone is set to silent or not.
